Similar to the human body, a building is much more than a structure.

It breathes, it expands, contracts and is dependent upon its environment – both interior and exterior.

The region between Southern Indiana and Central Alabama is called the mixed humid climate. This region is characterized by over 20 inches per year of precipitation and winters that average below 45 degrees. Therefore this region is unique in its huge temperature and humidity differentials and can make designing a very challenging endeavor. More about design later…

Any owner wants to avoid warranty and call back situations, so we are looking to design and build using the best products and systems (sometimes paying a little more up front) to reduce warranty and call back expenses. Designing it for higher quality can be viewed as an investment, for example:

  1. Better circulation systems can reduce operating cost
  2. Improving this building enclosure can allow the system to be downsized and perhaps costly to install and maintain.

Since a building is a system we should apply a system approach for all things such as warranty, call back, mitigation, energy conservation, and building efficiency. For more information, there are several good books are available at the Building Science Corporation in Somerville, MA.
